(VIENNA, WV)-- Ohio Valley University welcomed West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III to campus September 27 for a special address before hundreds of students, faculty and special guests from the community.
Manchin spoke to the OVU student body for approximately 30 minutes and addressed topics such as education, the future of West Virginia’s workforce, and the goals of his administration. During the program OVU President Dr. James A Johnson bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree upon Governor Manchin for his outstanding tenure in public office and his service to the State of West Virginia.
“We are honored to recognize your accomplishments, your commitment to higher education in our state, and your outstanding service to the people of the great State of West Virginia,” President Johnson said.
Governor Manchin presented Dr. Johnson with an official commendation recognizing the progress the Ohio Valley University campus has made in recent years, and his tenure at OVU.
“It was an honor to host the Governor of West Virginia and to accept his official recognition on behalf of our entire campus community,” Dr. Johnson said “I was thrilled to introduce him to our students and employees, and celebrate our recent degree additions, facilities expansion, and enrollment growth with him. He is an ardent supporter of higher education throughout the state and this was his first visit to our campus.”
OVU Student Government Association President Adam Kennedy also presented Governor Manchin with a special Bible during the program.
A reception was held in the Rampy Hall Commons where the Governor took time to meet and talk with students and campus guests. Dr. Johnson also hosted a private luncheon for the Governor following the reception.
